Master Class with Ishigaki Yumesaku

Join us for the inaugural DN Master Class, an exclusive event designed to deepen CEO relationships and build trust within Japan Inc. This invitation-only event features DN member Ishigaki Yumesaku, Executive Director at MUMSS, who will share his expertise on fostering trust with Japanese stakeholders.

Master Class Details

DN Master Classes are focused on practical business topics introduced by an acknowledged “Master” in a confidential setting with 5-9 CEOs. Each session includes 20-25 minutes of opening commentary followed by an interactive discussion over excellent food in a private room. These sessions are designed for CEOs to share their best and worst experiences with their peers.

For our first Master Class, Ishigaki Yumesaku will provide insights on how to foster trust with Japanese stakeholders. As an elite executive at one of Japan’s most traditional companies, and with experience working in London, Ishigaki-san oversees key operations of one of the most famous JVs in Japan, between Mitsubishi UFJ and Morgan Stanley. His perspective on the interaction between Western and Japanese executives offers valuable lessons on building long-term, successful business relationships.

The Challenge of Building Trust in Japan

Foreign executives in Japan often find it challenging to cultivate deep, trusting relationships with Japanese colleagues. Unlike other cultures where dinner parties and home visits are common, in Japan, personal and professional lives are kept separate. This makes building a local network in Tokyo particularly demanding.

However, avoiding this challenge is crucial. In times of crisis, having trusted and powerful allies can be fundamental to the survival of the business and the CEO’s career. Ishigaki-san will provide background on how Japanese network, who they trust, how that trust can be gained, and how it can be suddenly lost.

He will share his observations on what underpins long-term successful business relationships, drawing from his extensive experience. For example, during the 2008 financial crisis, a $9 billion equity investment from Mitsubishi UFJ in Morgan Stanley, thanks to the trust built over many years, helped Morgan Stanley survive.

CEOs looking to grow and protect their business in the demanding Japanese market should not miss this opportunity to gain invaluable insights from Ishigaki Yumesaku.
